Indonesia: North Sumatra - Bukit Lawang (Day 65-68)

Bukit Lawang is a quiet village located on the clear Bohorok river and on the outskirts of the Gunung Leuser National Park, the last sanctuary of the Sumatran Orangutans (about 6000). Tubing is the national sport there after trekking. We indeed went for a 2-day trekking and it was far from being an easy hike... We saw a dozen of Ourangutans and quite a few Thomas leaf monkeys which are quite funky as well as macaques which are everywhere and very cheeky. I was filled as I love them. Ourangoutans are amazing to observe... We missed the Gibbons. Our night at the camp in the jungle was fun too even though we slept on the floor.

Guides are very good at entertaining at night. After our shower in the freezing cold waterfall, it was indeed time for tricks (with matches), stories and cards games.

Thierry woke up the day after in the middle of the jungle with dozens of macaques playing around. Not too bad for a 31st birthday which ended with rafting (tubing) on the river back to the village after a hard walk up and down in the jungle.

Bukit Lawang est un village situe sur le bord de la riviere Bohorok et a l'oree du parc national Gunung Leuser, le dernier sanctuaire des ourangoutans de Sumatra (6000 a peu pres). Rafting (sur de grosses chambres a air) est le sport national apres la randonnee dans la jungle. Nous sommes en effet partis 2 jours dans la jungle qui n'a pas ete de tout repos... Ca c'etait de la marche qui monte et qui descent... Nous avons vu une dizaine d'ourangoutans, des singes Thomas Leaf qui sont mignons et marrants et aussi des macaques qui sont partout et tres malins. Les ourangoutans sont impressionants a observer... J'ai ete comblee car je les adore tous. Nous n'avons pas eu la chance de voir de gibbons par contre. Notre nuit dans la jungle etait tres sympathique malgre la nuit passee a dormir sur le sol. Thierry s'est reveille au milieu de la jungle entoure de dizaines de singes jouant autour. Pas trop mal pour un 31ieme anniversaire! Les guides sont tres bons pour distraire leur invites. Apres une douche tres froide sous une petite cascade et bataille d'eau, c'etait l'heure des devinettes (a l'aide d'allumettes), de tours de magie et jeux de cartes.
