Indonesia: Nusa Tenggara - Lombok & Gili Trawangan (Day 40-52)

SELAMAT TAHUN BARU 2011!

After spending Christmas in Jakarta (not by choice as we just wanted to avoid this city but holiday season and flights made it this way), we landed in Lombok, the island east of Bali. We chose to spend the last few days of the year on a little island off-shore Lombok: Gili Trawangan, still the biggest of the 3 Gili's islands and the most lively. Clear blue water was 'au rendez-vous' but the weather was not as sunny as it should be for paradise (Indonesia is having a particular heavy rainy season as in many other countries). But it was still warm enough to get slightly sunburned (Thierry). Swimming, walking, beach bondfire and relaxing have been the mottos for these few days where we stayed in an isolated bungalows hotel on the south of the island (BINTANG hotel - the cheapest and best location). We also went diving once but were a bit disappointed with what we saw - all corals are broken and bleached as they used to fish with dynamite. So only one, the first and  not last during our journey though as it was great being underwater again after 4 years. We ate at the same address during our whole stay on the island: 'chez Mamie Goreng' we called her, the grand-mother who owns the little warung between the numerous restaurants for tourists. Cheap and ok food as the local indonesian menu is not very diversified anyway.

A fun and floaded New Year 2011! We started on the beach until 11 pm and finished early morning with water to the knees in the streets or alleys.

Back for a few days in Lombok, island well-known by surfers (south) and which has the 2nd highest volcano in Indonesia. Rinjani cannot be climbed during the moonsoon season... so no luck or maybe lucky because it looked very high. We went on a motorbike trip with our 2 buddys Alex and Capucine we met On Gili Trawangan and only visited half of what we wanted as we had some slight problems with the scooter. It was not too much of a deal as we got stuck in an amazingly beautiful village: SAPIT. Only 2 guesthouses in the village which is located in the middle of paddifields, forest and jungle with view on the Rinjani on one side and on the sea on the other. We were the only ones there.

The difference between Lombok and Bali is the religion: Bali is mostly Hindu and Lombok Muslim with some balinese tradition in the capital Mataram.

Apres avoir passe Noel a Jakarta, (pas par choix car nous voulions eviter cette ville mais le prix des vols en cette periode en a decide ainsi), nous avons atteri a Lombok, l'ile a l'est de Bali.Nous avons choisi de passer les derniers jours de l'annee sur une petite ile off-shore Lombok: GILI TRAWANGAN, qui est tout de meme la plus grosse ile des 3 iles Gilis et la plus animee. L'eau etait bien bleu turquoise mais le temps n'etait pas le plus ensoleille et pluvieux de temps en temps. Cela dit la chaleur etait tout de meme au rendez-vous et donc assez pour bronzer un peu. Nage, marche, feu sur la plage, relaxation ont ete les mots d'ordre pendant ces 5 jours ou nous sommes restes au Bintang Bungalow hotel, un bungalow avec vue sur la mer isole au sud de l'ile. Nous sommes aussi aller plonger, premiere du voyage, qui nous a un peu decu car tous les coraux sont casses et blanchis - ils avaient pour habitude de pecher a la dynamite. Mais c'etait tout de meme bon d'etre sous l'eau apres 4 ans. Nous avons mange a la meme adresse pendant tout notre sejour sur l'ile 'chez mamie Goreng' nous l'avons appelle (MIE ou NASI Goreng sont les plats principaux), la mamie qui tient le petit 'warung' (resto local) entre les nombreux restaurants pour touristes. Pas cher et pas trop mal, le menu indonesien n'est pas tres diversifie de toute facon.

Un nouvel an 2011 sympathique et inonde! Nous avons commence sur la plage jusqu'a 23h et continue sous la pluie inonde jusqu'au genoux jusqu'au petit matin.

De retour pour quelques jours sur Lombok, ile tres connue par les surfers (sud) et qui a le 2ieme volcan le plus haut de toute l'indonesie. Rinjani ne peut malheureusement pas etre escalade pendant la mousson... donc pas de chance ou peut-etre valait mieux car il est haut. Nous sommes parti 3 jours en moto/scooter avec nos 2 potes Alex and Cap que nous avons rencontre sur Gili Trawangan. Nous avons reussi a visiter que la moitie de ce que l'on voulait car nous avons eu quelques petits soucis avec le scooter mais cela n'a pas ete trop un probleme car l'endroit ou nous sommes restes coincer etait juste magnifque: SAPIT. Seulement 2 hotels dans le village situe au milieu des rizieres, foret et jungle avec la vue d'un cote sur le Rinjani et de l'autre sur la mer (nous etions les seuls touristes).

La difference entre Bali et Lombok est la religion: Bali est en grande partie Hindu  alors que Lombok est musulman avec quelques traditions balinaises (a Mataram la capitale).
